As summer approaches, many people are looking for ways to achieve a sun-kissed glow without the risks of ultraviolet exposure. Self-tanners have become a popular alternative, offering a bronzed look without the need for sunbathing or tanning beds.

Estheticians, the skincare professionals who work with clients daily, have shared their opinions on which self-tanning products deliver real results and which ones they tend to skip. Their insights are based on firsthand experience with various formulas, application methods, and how the products perform on different skin types.

According to these experts, the key to a natural-looking tan lies in the formulation and the application process. They recommend looking for products that contain ingredients like DHA, which is the active component that darkens the skin, but also include moisturizing agents to prevent a patchy or dry finish. Products that are easy to apply evenly, such as mousses or gradual lotions, are often preferred over those that are more difficult to spread.

Estheticians also advise against products that have a strong, unpleasant smell, as this can be a sign of low-quality ingredients. They suggest that a good self-tanner should have a pleasant or neutral scent, or at least one that fades quickly after application.

Another point raised by the professionals is the importance of preparation. Before applying any self-tanner, they recommend exfoliating the skin to remove dead cells, which helps the product adhere evenly. They also suggest moisturizing dry areas like elbows, knees, and ankles to prevent the tan from appearing darker in those spots.

When it comes to specific products, the estheticians mentioned several brands that have proven reliable. For a gradual, buildable tan, they pointed to lotions that can be used daily as part of a regular skincare routine. For a more immediate result, foam formulas that dry quickly and develop within a few hours were highlighted. They also noted that some newer products include color-correcting ingredients, such as green or purple tints, to neutralize redness or yellow tones in the skin, resulting in a more realistic bronze.

On the other hand, the experts said they tend to skip products that are labeled as “accelerators” or “tan extenders” that claim to boost the effect of natural sunlight. They argue that these products do not provide the same level of control or safety as traditional self-tanners and often lead to uneven results.

In addition to the product itself, the estheticians stressed that the application tool matters. They recommend using a mitt or glove to apply the product, as this helps avoid stained hands and ensures a smooth, streak-free finish. They also advise waiting until the product is completely dry before dressing, and avoiding water or sweat for at least a few hours after application to allow the color to develop properly.

Overall, the message from the skincare professionals is clear: with the right product and proper technique, self-tanners can provide a safe and effective way to achieve a healthy-looking glow. They encourage people to choose formulas that are suited to their skin type and to follow preparation steps carefully for the best results.
