Brazil learns to slow down from London living

A 12-week stay in London for drama school taught one visitor more than acting. It changed how she relates to time. She returned to the United States with a set of daily habits that helped her slow down in one of the world’s busiest cities.

Everyday Gatherings

Pub and cafe culture in Europe differs from what is common in the United States. People gather outside on a Tuesday or Wednesday evening, drinking a pint or sipping espresso. The practice does not require waiting until Friday. Going out for a pint can mean just one drink and one hour, then moving on. The visitor plans to bring home the habit of more casual midweek gatherings with neighbors and friends.

Tea As Ritual

In the United Kingdom, tea is part of daily life. Kettles are common in homes and shared spaces. The visitor found herself choosing tea over coffee more often. The ritual of boiling water and letting the tea steep offered a quiet moment to start the day without rushing. Two traditional afternoon teas, one at the Wallace Collection and another at Raffles London at The OWO, reinforced the idea that sharing tea is an excuse to linger. The visitor now treats her daily drink as a reason to pause, not something to consume while multitasking.

Long Walks As A Reset

Walking became a way to pause mentally. Choosing to walk instead of taking the Tube or a bus meant the visitor easily reached 12,000 steps a day. Those walks brought clarity and creative ideas. The suggestion is to lace up shoes and go for a walk, and to try a new route to see what can be discovered.

Midweek Events

The visitor made Wednesday evening theatre a ritual. Every show she saw on a Wednesday was packed, including at smaller theatres that do not typically draw tourist crowds. The experience left her inspired for the rest of the week. It was a lesson in not waiting for the weekend. Life can happen any day of the week. The visitor plans to explore her own city on weeknights instead of saving everything for Saturday and Sunday.

Adopt A Work-To-Live Mindset

The visitor noticed a different relationship with work in London. In the United States, a live-to-work mindset is common, with pride taken in working late and squeezing in extra projects. In the United Kingdom, the mindset appeared to be working to live. Prioritizing breaks, seeing friends, and spending time outdoors felt like a normal part of life. There was clear respect for the end of the workday. The visitor aims to hold onto that balance, pursuing goals while making room for slow mornings, long walks, time with friends, and rest.

The lesson from London was not about doing less, but about making space for a life that feels full.
